Bree's Dinosaur by Andi C. Buchanan

mysterious medium-paced

4.0

I do love the cover of this! It was one of my favourites in the year it came out, and I really enjoy the story as well. Most especially I enjoy the protagonist, Cam, whose exasperated relationship with her difficult host sister, a much younger girl who is building a dinosaur in her bedroom... possibly. I have to admit I was kind of hoping for this great mechanical horror to come stomping through the neighbourhoods of Wellington, a sort of steampunk sauropod. What actually happens is a lot quieter, and a lot subtler - which admittedly is a narrative choice I tend to appreciate a lot - and it's one that Buchanan routinely excels at.
