If you’re looking for a story that is fun, cozy, and full of trans joy this is for you!

What I loved
  • The found family was amazing
  • The banter!
  • The friendships
  • Gene’s family
  • Dodger (Luis’s dog)
  • So much trans joy!!!

This book was really cute and I did have a fun time but I found myself wanting /more/ the whole time. It felt like everything was kept very surface level.
ADHD and anxiety are a big part of Gene and Luis’s lives but it seems to me that it was only brought up when it would help a plot point.
And while I get not wanting to deep dive into those things and keep the novel fun and light I think that keeping things surface level really hindered Gene’s growth and development as a character.
The tension and growth of the romantic relationship between Gene and Luis felt kind of lacking to me and I think it’s because of how much of the book was focused on baseball and dedicated to the actual games.
I also didn’t love that even after two years of living with Jack, Gene barely knew any sign language and would speak so he could lip read even though when Jack was introduced we were told that he prefers signing.

I also fell like we never got a clear answer as to why Luis stopped talking to Gene?

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC!
