The Girls by Emma Cline
5.0
I'm actually surprised by the low rating on Goodreads. I really enjoyed this book! It's difficult to read due to the nature of the story but Emma Cline enchanted me with her writing. I was hooked by the first page.
Loosely based on the Manson Family and the tragedy of Sharon Tate, 14-year-old Evie Boyd falls unwittingly into a cult, lured by her inexplicable attraction to Suzanne, an older girl often described as lost and feral. Evie's whole existence is lived on the edges of other people's lives, a perfect vantage point for us readers as we float alongside her. She romanticizes her experiences with the naivety of juvenile girl and her abrupt awakening was painful to read.
I really can't say enough good things about this book. It was beautiful and harsh and dreamy and disturbing.
4.5 stars.
