Umbrella by Will Self
3.0

Will Self packs a lot into the book - and one is faced with something of a dilemma as to whether to go with the flow, and end up missing the majority of the references and allusions, or to attempt to make sense of everything and end up with a rather painful reading experience.

I ultimately opted for the former and there is no doubt that Self's use of language is exceptional, and many of the difficulties of the multiple voices and shifting time perspectives actually fall away when once gets into the flow of the text.

However, this is by no means an easy - or even a particularly enjoyable read.
