Outlawed
by Anna North
This is an alternate history western of the Hole in the Wall Gang. Women who can’t get pregnant or otherwise don’t fit in are deemed to be witches and are hanged.
I was so invested in Ada, the young woman who wanted to be a midwife but who just couldn’t get pregnant. She’s left with a terrible choice – run away or be hanged.
What follows is an interesting and clever retelling of the Wild West and the Hole in the Wall Gang. The book brought up so many issues about women’s worth and expectations and how they can forge a different path for themselves.
Other issues are also dealt with, such as sexuality, mental illness, family, capitalism…
This book definitely was not what I was expecting. There was definitely more survival and less outlaw than I thought there would be. This really was a story about the women, what happens when they don’t fit in, and how they are scapegoated. It definitely kept me turning the pages.
Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for the review copy.
