The Black Parade by Kyoko M

3.0

Jordan Amador has a problem she needs to atone for the life of a man she murdered. To do this she has to assist 100 ghosts cross to the other side. As a seer she has the ability to communicate with the dead and so far she assisted 98 but then a new ghost enters her world. Michael is a wannabe rock star and helping cross over becomes complicated, real complicated. Jordan is struggling to juggle working as a waitress, pay the bills and sleep without any nightmares. With Michael comes some angry demons trying to take her soul and resisting the very tempting Michael.
Kyoko has created a world that is wholly believable as we experience it through Jordan’s perspective. We understand the difficulties Jordan faces both externally and internally. The inability to sleep has Jordan relying on alcohol to provide relief. Though she has friends, her ghost assisting job means that she has no social life and continually finds herself stretched too thin.
The first quarter of the book for me was the best. It was dense in giving Jordan a strong back story and laying out the difficulties she faced. However, this becomes somewhat resolved rather easily. There is a time bomb with meeting the deadline of assisting 100 ghosts but it is solved and the tension of will she make it or not is too easily defused.
The rest of the book is about the relationship between Michael and Jordan with the will they or wont they scenario. There are powerful forces at work keeping them apart and there is their own personal issues at work.
Kyoko is good at mixing pop culture references and keeps you interested in what is happening. She writes with good pace and gives her characters plenty of flaws and strengths. She has also delved into the world of Angels and Demons and used the source material really effectively.
If you want to jump in and try something different, really consider giving this a crack. It is good escapism.
