The Children of Men
by P.D. James
This so completely surpassed the movie version, but it was interesting to see how much license the filmmakers took without ruining the spirit of the novel. The device of switching from first- to third-person narrative is a bit strange, and not something you see much, but it's a minor annoyance weighed against great characterization, word choice, and pacing.
