Shattered
by Kevin Hearne
I loved this series when I started it. They had straight forward beginning, middle, and ends and I never felt manipulated by the endings. The stories are well written and amusing and the characters are well drawn.
This book, however, is the third one in a row in which Mr. Hearne has seen fit to use either a cliff hanger ending or use the ending as a means to pre-sell the next book. This is the third book in a row in this series in which the ending left a bad taste in my mouth due to marketing manipulation, which is how I see cliff hangers and endings that are nothing more than previews for the next book.
I'm not sure I'll be in much of a rush to read any more of these until the series is complete. I do not like to end an otherwise enjoyable book reading experience on a sour note, and 3 in a row is a pattern. So I think I'll eschew it until the series is over.
