A Lady of Persuasion by Tessa Dare

3.0

I felt that this was a perfectly acceptable romance, but at the same time was frustrated by some of the side characters and their cameos. (Not Joss and Hettie, they were lovely, but did we really have to spend SO LONG on bitchy old women or screaming childbirth?)

Isabel was sweet but held herself in tight self control due to traumas from her past, and let her passion out to play only when it came to advocating against oppression. I think the people who disliked her were mostly just deflecting their own guilt. She didn't act superior or judgemental about it (she even took joy in feeding foundlings the same treat she denied herself for ethical reasons), but rather tried to gently educate and persuade.

Toby was a delight for the most part, except lying to rise in his wife's esteem. It was a relief when they figured things out between themselves. This is not as strong as Tessa's more recent work, but it was still a pleasant read.
