"They've known for years. Decades. It didn't make any difference. None at all. Because now it's here and despite all that knowing, he's lost. Everyone is. They had all hung their hats on the question of proximity. Yes, it will be bad, they'd said to one another, but we have years. We have time. Somehow we'll solve this along the way. He doesn't even have the energy to be angry."

"They fought so hard to keep a world that was not meant to stay the same"

This was a slow, thought-provoking read about the devastating effects of climate change. How humanity thought they had so much time but it came faster and worse than anticipated, how everyone everywhere would be eventually affected, how the world/nature tries to reset itself and start anew. It follows one family through time as they learn to adapt to change, loss, grief, learning to survive, figuring out who you can trust, friends that become family, and finding themselves in this new world.

It really is a must read for everyone as natural disasters become more and more common. It's beautifully written but shows some depth to the storms and nature's unrelenting wrath. It makes you think about how fragile life is and how much we take for granted in this modern world. Electricity, telehones
, Internet, news, grocery stores, automotive transportation, medicine, our loved ones alive and well. We really do not appreciate it all enough.
