Legendary
by Stephanie Garber
AHHHHHH? OMGG. *eternal screaming* I AM IN LOVE. WITH THIS BOOK. Legendary was amazing. I don’t even know how to review this book; It was somehow 10000 times better than Caraval and literally so close to perfection!!
Legendary is not as good as Caraval. It is better. It has more magic, intrigue, world building, and of course, romance. New characters, including one of the most memorable of the series, are introduced, and our knowledge of existing characters is expanded. In short, it is a thoroughly engrossing story that will have you hooked from the very first page.
⤷ review:
Legendary shows us Donatella’s perspective as, this time round, she’s the one playing Legend’s infamous game. Tella has made a desperate bargain with a mysterious criminal, and what Tella owes him no one has ever been able to deliver: Caraval Master Legend’s true name, only this time, she has to be a participant, for her end of the bargain entails uncovering Legend’s true name. To hold up her end of the bargain with her mysterious “friend,” Tella must once again be a part of Caraval. …and the only way to do that is to win the game.
But winning Caraval will come at a steep cost and bring to light a secret that has the potential to shatter her heart. I adored her part in the ending to Caraval, when we had a glimpse into just how smart and brave she is, so I’m grateful that the whole book is from her point of view. She’s definitely one of the most interesting character that i had ever read about.
Legendary was so much fun, incredibly dark and SO ACTION-PACKED, I nearly fell off my bed. This book is a lot darker than the first one mostly because it manages to be a mystery, adventure and romance all in one beautiful book and I absolutely adored it.
One of the most thing i loved in this book is that it is written from Tella’s, not Scarlett’s, point of view. Tella has little screen, or rather page, time in Caraval, so it is a reward for me to see her take center stage in this book.
EVEN THOUGH? i didn't like her in the first book but when i discovered her personality and thought, i could never have words to how much i liked her.
We gain insight into the inner workings of her mind, as well as witness firsthand just how courageous and selfless she can be. She might have played a supporting role in Caraval, but in Legendary, we see that she is a leading lady in her own right. She’s smart, strong and fierce at the same time as being pretty and wearing wonderful dresses.
“While some rooms on the estate had monsters hiding beneath their beds, Tella swore her mother’s suite concealed enchantment. Hints of emerald light dusted the air as if fairies came to play whenever her mother left.”
THIS got me hooked in the book right away, it draws attention to the novel’s fantastical elements, and the writing is also imbued with the innocent eagerness of a young Tella who avidly explores the mysteries of her own home. she clearly believes in magic and finds it everywhere.
There was so much going on with the beautiful and dangerous game of Caraval happening all over again. I LOVE BOOKS THAT PLAY MIND GAMES WITH YOU because I was confused and puzzled in the best possible way in this hole book and Tella is trying so hard not to get swept up in the game and remember that it’s not real – or is it? She is told that this game is different to the others – so which to believe?
Legendary also introduces us to Jacks, one of the most interesting villains I have come across in quite some time. As one of the immortal Fates, he is devilishly handsome but also cruel and cunning, who’s basically a cold-hearted, power hungry heir to the Elantine Empire. He’s definitely the villainous type, but at the same time I couldn’t help but like him a little? His head-to-heads with Tella were quick and sometimes also quite funny. There’s so much depth to his character too.
AND THEN THERE IS THE QUESTION OF WHO IS LEGEND?! hmm, i have a lot to say but nothing to say at the time. I was happy that Legend was finally revealed but i was a little bit disappointed how it was revealed.
BUT OH GOSH THE ROMANCE BETWEEN TELLA AND DANTE IS BEAUTIFUL.
One of the most captivating parts of the story is the romance between Tella and Dante. The chemistry between them is palpable, and they have a wonderful dynamic, replete with plenty of playful banter and swoon-worthy interactions. It is a slow-burn romance, where you are left wondering if they will end up together right up until the end of the book.
We don’t see as much of Scarlett and Julian in the book owing to the change in POV, but the LITTLE we did see were pretty interesting. I probably would have missed them a lot but I loved Tella’s character, and I guess I got so so into in her side of the story that I didn’t really wonder about them as much. Scarlett develops a little through the book, she’s much braver following the events of Caraval and a part of me felt super proud of her by the end of Legendary.
I liked Julian more than Dante and Tella more then Scarlett but when i finished this book i could not prefer anyone from another, I LOVE THEM ALL.
OHHHHH THE WRITING is another thing to talk about, i liked how it intrigued me into the book without even knowing that I'm reading words in a book, it made the book just so beautiful and magical. I didn't get bored of how beautifully it was writing.
In conclusion, THIS BOOK IS SOOO ADDICTIVE AND TWISTY AND I FELL IN LOVE IN EVERY WORD THAT I4VE READ. This is exactly how I like my fantasies, dark and mysterious and Legendary DELIVERED.
