Spider-Gwen, Volume 1 by

2.0

I was disappointed in this volume but I’m intrigued enough by Spider-Gwen to read the second one. I felt like a lot of information was missing from this arc, coming in as a n00b to the Spider-Verse. I never felt truly connected to Gwen Stacy and couldn’t understand why she felt responsible for Peter Parker’s death since it was never made very clear how or why he died. It was hard to feel invested in her character and story, which also jumped all over the place without explanation. Okay, suddenly we are in a different universe talking to a pregnant Jessica Jones, who is revealed to be Gwen’s mentor, even though it’s the first time we’re seeing her and we never see her after the one scene. Okay, now we’re seeing a teeny bit of backstory on Captain America, who in this universe is female and black (which was totally awesome btw). It was very disjointed and chaotic, and difficult to track with. Overall I felt the story lacked a certain amount of spark, like how I’ve felt reading Squirrel Girl and Ms. Marvel.

It was fun to see other Marvel characters randomly pop in, like Peggy Carter. There was also a single shot of lady Thor, which had me hoping she would show up later on, but never did.
