North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

1.0

If you're thinking of reading this because you believe it to be a progressive story of economic strife in the North, I advise you to steer clear. 'Pride and Prejudice for socialists' it is not. Can barely even consider it to be a romance, given that our couple were lacklustre and utterly unlikeable. devoid of any emotion, even in the midst of countless, pointless, needless deaths.
All this could be forgiven if the novel was at least entertaining, but alas, it was a complete drag (after a promising introduction).
1.5 stars (given due to the strong beginning and lovely, but tedious, prose.
