The World Record Book of Racist Stories by Lacey Lamar, Amber Ruffin

5.0

Just like YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED TO LACEY, Ruffin and Lamar curated a hilarious and jaw dropping followup that includes even more horrific racist stories they or family members have endured in their life. The delivery and storytelling is hilarious (highly recommend the audiobook) despite the heavy nature of the stories. The sisters bounce back and forth with humor and inside jokes that makes it difficult not to smile.

Despite the humor, it’s a stark reminder that racism is alive and well to this day (I mean, we know this by just turning on the news). Even with the humor, the blatant racism was infuriating beyond belief. Most of the situations are so cringeworthy that I couldn’t help but get secondhand embarrassment purely due to the stupidity and ignorance some white people still believe. It was like a crash on the highway you couldn’t look away from.

I wish a book like this filled with racist stories didn’t exist, but it’s important to read and very well-done.
