Tropic of Capricorn by Henry Miller
4.0
Profane, obscene, and subversive, Miller had a hard time finding a publisher when he wrote this and, sadly, would have an even harder time today. I suspect the real reason it was banned was not the language nor the sexual content but rather the condemnation of working for a living and America's genocidal origins (yeah, Henry knew way back then). Miller writes like a jazz player, going on mad, improvisational runs built around undulating phrasings. As a reader, sometimes I'd get lost, not fully comprehending, but then I'd catch up again. A word of caution: some readers may find Miller's limited portrayal of women and use of ethnic/racial epithets offensive.
