Emotional overload

Oh how I love these Whiskeys and the Dark Knights. It is always an intensely emotional journey. The stories always cover very challenging topics and real struggles, and somehow it manages to not come out too dark. The subject matter may be dark (in this case there was a kidnapping, a cult, SA, physical and mental abuse) but the story is written in such a way that it doesn’t read like a “dark story”. It’s intense and emotional, I cried and felt my heart hurt, but also swooned and wanted to be a part of the Dark Knights family.

I would recommend reading the prequel to this- Freeing Sully. It’s only 40 pages long, and gives you a glimpse into the life she managed to escape, as well as the events of her actual escape. It’s mentioned in this story, so if you have not read it you will not feel lost at all. But I feel like it gives you a fuller appreciation of her past. She is so incredibly strong, and managed to retain her fighting spirit no matter how many years they fought to beat it out of her. She’s sweet and kind and adorably innocent despite the horrors the lived through. And stoic Callahan/Cowboy was the perfect person to guide her on her journey to healing and finding happiness. It’s not a quick easy read, it’s definitely an emotional journey. But it was so worth the ride and tears shed along the way.
