Second Glance

Every time I pick up a Jodi Picoult novel I know I am not only going to be reading a good story, but I am also going to be learning about something new. Previous Picoult novels I’ve read have covered archaeology and Egyptian gods, Amish customs, and how to track whales. The research Picoult puts behind every novel is staggering and admirable and she truly writes as if she is an expert in all these fields. Second Glance had a focus on the sterilisation laws in Vermont, and other American states, pre WW2. This is not something I knew anything about beforehand, but it’s now something I feel well educated in.
I enjoyed the plot of Second Glance, although there were some characters I just could not connect with, and Picoult jumped between character narratives too often for me to feel 100% on top of who everyone was. The last couple chapters were a suspenseful read that had me changing my opinion of how the book would end at every page, in true Picoult fashion. I think the true finale was the perfect ending to this book.
