The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick
4.0

There are a lot of first-person books about broken people. This one talks about masculine roles in our society, how we figure out what we are thinking and what the people around us are thinking. It's about need, and the cycle of abuse, and people who can't communicate. This book is sort of a "Fault in Our Stars" + "Curious Incident of the Dog..." + ...something similar but about middle class Americans in Pittsburgh?

This book's voice is too juvenile to be believable. Also, events are too coincidental and lined up to be believable (up to and including a montage, a Christmas miracle, and a perfect "all wrapped up" ending.) So it isn't trying to be realistic.

The writing is good. The structure is good. It's just a good, solid read that will challenge you if you haven't read this sort of book before. It might bore you or bother you or seem naive if you've read a lot of books like this. The stuff with the main character's dad was my favorite part.
