Oof. Ok. Firstly, I'm very excited to read the next book. That said this sorely needs editing.

Things get exciting at around page 300. Before that things are interesting but a good chunk could be cut. In particular a lot of the excerpt chapter openings end up repeating things we learn or have learned in the story. Also the typesetting of them could be a lot better. There are also strange choices around POV switches within chapters.

Some of the cool stuff. This is a science-fantasy setting that gave me Ghibli vibes but also elves are vampires and the world is like The Shimmer from Annihilation.

We have the wrecks and residue of an alien insectoid hive race littering the land, the waning saviours of the last war turning to vampirism in the wake of their tree-god's death, the order of a drowned saint imprisoning women cursed (or blessed) with witch-fire.

So many cool ideas that start to create an interesting setting and character motivations, it just takes too long to get going.

Also our hot elf hero insists on saying aloud the names of his special sex moves during sex which makes him seem like a character from an old Shaw Bros movie or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and surely must be a mood killer.
