An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn

3.0

It seems like the plots in this series just keep getting progressively worse, but for some reason I can't stop reading them. Once again, the mystery in this book was barely a mystery, and they kept getting sidetracked from actually investigating it so Veronica could play dress-up. Also I totally got catfished by the cover and was expecting a mountain expedition :( And once the culprit was revealed, it was actually laughable how poorly they had planned everything out and how easily they went down. I did like the way Veronica was written as feeling a bit stifled and acting out because of it, but also like....Stoker's concerns are extremely valid! Why does every single book have to end with them getting a gun pointed to their heads! There are in fact other ways you can conclude a mystery! Yet I knew their conversations about taking less risks weren't going to go anywhere meaningful because they have to keep endangering themselves if the series is going to continue. I like listening to these books because they're fast to get through, ridiculous enough to be entertaining, and the audiobook narrator is very good, but I feel like in the last few books I've been getting diminishing returns. At least this one had lesbians in it!
