The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone by Felicity McLean
5.0
'A ganglion. That's what our cul-de-sac was: a lump that grows in someplace it shouldn't and nobody's really sure why'
.
The story centres around Tikka, a 11 year old girl who's friends, the Van Apfel sisters, go missing. Now older and working in a labatory, she is forced to go home because her sister is terminally ill. The story then flits between past and present, and shows how her life was affected after they disappeared.
.
This book was equal parts funny and disturbing, and I loved every second of it. I haven't laughed out loud at a book in such a long time, but Tikka was such a lovably naive and self assure 11 year old girl; she came out with the funniest things. I recommend this to people who loved The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides or The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker, it had the same dreamlike poetic narrative.
.
Thank you so much to One World Publications and Point Blank for the early copy in exchange for an honest review.
