Thornhedge
by T. Kingfisher
This was so much more than I expected! I genuinely was charmed by the way Kingfisher took such a classic fairytale and was able to add so many unique elements that it began to feel more like it’s own story than a retelling, while still maintaining ties to the original tale. The characters, the atmosphere, and story were all enchanting. I wish there more!
Thornhedge is a whimsical Sleeping Beauty retelling that follows a toad shaped heroine, named Toadling, who is bound to a tower that is surrounded by a steep wall of brambles with thorns as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords; a tower where a sleeping princess is kept. This isn’t the Princess’ story though, as the narrative focuses on Toadling, who as a baby was stolen from her family and raised in the land of faerie. Upon reaching maturity, the faerie ask Toadling a favor of bestowing a blessing of protection on a newborn child in the human world. But nothing with faeries is ever that simple. Centuries later, Toadling finds herself faced with one of her biggest fears; a knight has come to the tower she looks after with the intent of breaking the curse, whose legend has been passed down through tales over the years. But Toadling is determined that the curse remain in tact, and is willing to do whatever she must to uphold it.
This story kept me engaged throughout and I highly recommend it!
