The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

4.0

“Hate is loud, but I think you'll learn it's because it's only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard. You might not ever be able to change their minds, but so long as your remember you're not alone, you will overcome.”
I was in desperate need of a heartwarming novel with endearing characters and an uplifting storyline.
This book is just that.
Linus Baker is a caseworker in the Department in charge of Magical Youth (DICOMY). He's been assigned a very classified case to investigate an orphanage with children who are gifted with rare magical abilities. He is to provide a recommendation post investigation if the orphanage is a safe place for the children.
Linus Baker is everything that I love in a character. He is unapologetically himself, he is full of empathy and compassion and his personal growth was so beautiful to follow. The children of this orphanage have fascinating magical abilities and they're so intellectually and emotionally sound. I was learning something new every time I read a chapter and towards the end I was crying in happy tears. The writing is descriptive, sometimes overtly so but beautiful regardless. The house in the cerulean sea is a place I'd very much like to visit. The description of colour and flowers created happy images in my mind.
The book speaks about prejudice against those who are different from the crowd, prejudice that instigates fear and hatred. The message is a strong one and is played out beautifully in the novel.
A must read to make your heart sing, if I may.
“Change often starts with the smallest of whispers. Like-minded people building it up to a roar.”
