The Sword of Summer
by Rick Riordan
Overall, I enjoyed this story, but it really just felt like a recycled version of the first Percy Jackson book using Norse Mythology instead of Greek. The characterization of Magnus and Percy is pretty much the same, both snarky young teenagers who find out their true parental heritage after tragedies involving their mother. They get a crash course in who they are, meet a bunch of people in a somewhat similar situation, find out one or more of their friends from 'back home' have known all along and were looking after them and then they set out on a quest to stop the world from ending with a few old/new friends.
I typically like to read YA books because they are less stressful and don't take themselves as seriously as a lot of adult novels, but this one was a bit sillier than I was hoping. Riordan was definitely pandering to his younger audience in several places (ie. multiple fart jokes, things like Odin being into Powerpoint, and a talking sword that reminded me more of a frat brother). I think this book would have rated higher if he had left out the sillier scenes but hey, I'm not his target audience.
