This is definitely for middle-grade kids and so to an adult reader the plot can seem a bit basic and some of the story elements a bit childish. But really, the characters are outstanding. All three of the main characters are deep and real, with their own specific and serious traumas and neuroses. And all three of the main characters grow and develop over the course of the story. On top of that, the story is set in East Los Angeles, and the author absolutely nails it: the descriptions of the heat, the sounds, the scenes are all authentic and compelling.

This was a really enjoyable book given that it's for someone younger than I and I could see a 10 to 14 year old reader being absolutely captivated by it.
