November 9 by Colleen Hoover

3.5

Bits of November 9 absolutely worked for me, and some bits were frustrating. I, for example, never had the impression I was reading about two 18-year-old protagonists; they both sounded a lot older than that.

Knowing that I do enjoy Colleen Hoover books makes me feel a bit conflicted at times because a few of her relationships (and people) are outright toxic.

Ben is certainly problematic. I'll just leave one example here:

I shove the dress back at him. "I don't want to wear that, I want to wear this."
"No," he says. "I'm paying for dinner, so I get to choose what to stare at while we eat."

On the other hand, he's also too perfect (although, admittedly that fits the plot), and there is insta-love (which I hate), but of course, the insta-love here is different because the main character, too, hates insta-love, and comments on it more than once. A bit too meta for my taste.

The plot is gripping, and I only put this book down to eat. There was a moment where I audibly gasped, and Hoover's writing is definitely skilled. This is, however, my least favourite book of hers that I've read so far.

If you're a Colleen Hoover fan, go right ahead.
