Queen of the Conquered by Kacen Callender
5.0
I think I've found a new book to add to my all time favourite books. It absolutely deserved to be on the top 100 best fantasy books list.
There are no good people in this book. Not one. By the end I was gunning for every named character to die. Yet, the vast majority are sympathetic. Sigourney Rose is as much of a tyrant as the other kongelig, despite being raised by a slave (which is confusing in the end as to why they all hate her when they kinda created her...).
Several of the Fern are completely evil, others are somewhat sympathetic despite taking advantage of a system that oppresses others.
The overarching mystery is a good one with a frustrating but brilliantly pulled off ending. The method of having several pov's through Sigourney Rose's kraft is fantastically done.
Overall, a very difficult book to read. It really forces you to see these people as people and not the one dimensional monsters it's easier to pretend they are.
