I love Philip Pullman and I love fairy tales. I was disappointed that this collection of tales are pretty much copied from the original text, cleaned up and simplified here and there maybe. I was hoping that Pullman would add his own stamp to them but he didn't. Instead he seems to actively avoided adding anything of his own flare to them and they are just retellings.
I was I was surprised about is the darkness of the tales. I remember some if the tales were quite, well grim LOL but from childhood I don't remember them being quite so violent.
