Fun, fast-paced read. The tech in this book reminds me of Black Mirror episodes and Sword Art Online, seemingly possible in the not so distant future but with dangerous potential exploitations. I was so excited to find a series about an Asian American, female gamer and I was not disappointed. Emika Chen is a clever, thoughtful, and logical character who avoids falling into the traps of being a whiny protagonist. Her thought process throughout the book (who to trust, making decisions with terrible choices, etc) is very relatable as Lu gradually weaves in her tragic backstory. There were enough clues to figure out some of the reveals at the end. I did not expect the huge twist (that sets up the next book in the series) but it makes one ponder our society's relationship with technology and morality. Lu has created a world full of diverse characters and I'm adding multiple copies to my classroom library.
