The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon
5.0

The love affair I have with this book will truly never end. It is a masterpiece, the best fantasy novel I have ever read, and Tané and Ead will forever be two of my favorite characters from all of the books I've ever read. It's a feminist fantasy novel with dragons, magic, romance, enemies to lovers, and a beautiful and well-developed world and history.

There is something so special about a standalone novel knowing that this one book is all the time in the world that you get with these characters and it made me appreciate them much more. Samantha Shannon is an incredible writer, and her ability to make you fall in love with every character is astonishing, and her ability to paint the reader a picture of the world inside the novel is truly beautiful. The world Shannon has built in this story is gorgeous, and its focus on women and centering the stories of female characters was refreshing.

I was truly swept away by these characters on their respective journeys as they banded together in times of uncertainty and evil to overcome differences and stand together against the end of the world. I was so invested in the development of each character throughout the book that for the last 200 pages of the book I cried, not because it was sad, but because I was sad that the book was going to be over.

I recommend it to every fantasy reader I meet. I cannot say enough about this book, I was absolutely enchanted from start to finish and simply could not put it down. The story has captured my heart and it will forever remain one of my all-time favorite books.
