5 Stars.

Gosh, what a journey this was. My first read by this author and it won’t be my last. Emotionally this was hard, the story was depressing and bleak with very little hope throughout. Why five stars you ask? The writing was truly beautiful, I felt so invested in the story and the characters and I just had to know what happened next.

I also learnt so much from this story about a historical event and time period that I knew nothing about. I feel like I’ve taken something away from this but I can’t quite put it into words.

The events of the story are hard going and our characters go through a lot but alongside that you learn about a young woman that’s lost and lonely, who becomes a mother unexpectedly and finds a new family. You see her strength of character grow through adversity to protect her family and to stand up for what is right, despite the fear of the repercussions and the unknown.

I truly thought it was brilliant and it’ll definitely stick with me.
