Floodgates by Mary Calmes

emotional funny mysterious medium-paced

3.0

2023 edition, an updated version: I was amused to discover that I remembered nearly nothing from reading the first version of this book. I've read many Calmes novels since then.

This one is about average for this author: nearly always single POV, that MC is nearly always quirky, underestimates his looks, and is a 'fixer.' He also allows way more touching from people than I'd be comfortable with. There are all the usual dialogue tags she's known for, the danger, and the often amusing sex scenes.

I did not remember who the bad guy was, so really it was about time to re-read this. There are some editorial mistakes but not many. I think this author has written far better plots, so I've reduced the rating to average. Ah, personal growth and experience.

2017 review of original version, 5 stars at the time:
I wish I could read this again for the first time.

Everything is from Tracy's point of view. I found his understanding-curve to progress organically through the course of the story, his blind spots aren't always obvious to the reader. (To this one, anyway.) I guessed the perp but the way it's revealed is good. The end maybe goes on a little longer than necessary, but I enjoyed it: it has a purpose.

I've seen a couple reviews comparing this (unfavorably) to another novel of the author's, A Matter of Time. I'll read the free sample. Maybe I'll agree. Floodgates hooked me in before I finished the second chapter; Tracy's voice stays true all the way through.
