Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson

adventurous emotional mysterious tense medium-paced

A lot of things worked here. I liked the magic. I liked the ghosts. Sometimes it felt like the world was bending to the needs of the plot. This probably contributed to the worldbuilding feeling muddled and confusing. There's a lot going on in the worldbuilding, so I could see later entries in the series improving on the foundation the first book laid.
