Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

It took me a long time to finally get to this. It's probably because I knew it was overhyped and I was starting to drift away from reading YA fantasy. But suddenly I am feeling nostalgic for the 2010s. This book had alllll the tropes of 2010s YA, too. We have a teenage protagonist who has done things no one would have accomplished by 17 except a YA character. The protagonist is a Mary Sue. And of course there is a love triangle!

I think my biggest gripes with Celaena is everything amazing about her never hits the page. We are TOLD she is this great assassin but she acts more like typical 17 year old THAN an assassin. She actually has yet to assassinate anyone on the page. She would also make a horrible assassin as she gets caught off guard a lot, not to mention the candy. You are going to tell me you ate that mystery candy... without a thought?

However, I still enjoyed it. Like a lot of Sarah J Maas books, they are incredibly quick reads with an interesting world and interesting twists. I enjoyed my time in this book and I am really eager to continue with the series. So, I'm going to treat this with grace. It's 2010s YA. It's light fantasy. It was a good time.
