This book has been on my TBR list for some time, but knowing that within its pages I would be confronting - yet again - the brutality of the US Government's fight against the indigenous peoples of North America, primarily those of the plains, I had put off the evitable long enough...

After finishing this book, it is 1 of 2 books that I would highly recommend for anyone wanting to educate themselves about the realities of US with its indigenous peoples.  The other is An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz.  While the scope of these two books are different, Bury My Heart covers primarily the period of the 1860-1890 and History covers the full time line of the Americas, they both do an excellent job of giving the full breadth of this history.  If you received a traditional US history education in childhood, then I would strongly recommend these books to do the sometimes challenging work of educating oneself as an adult about these times.
