I really enjoyed reading Persepolis 1 and 2. The Islamic Revolution was touched on briefly in one high school history class, but other than that I didn't know too much about the history of Iran and the Middle East. Not only were these books educational, it's a wonderful story of an ordinary girl and her perseverance in the face of many adversities: political, social, and educational oppression, living in a war-zone, the deaths of friends and loved ones, isolation and being separated from family, trying to fit in, culture shock, and finding and losing love. What resonated with me the most are the parallels between 1980s Iran and present day United States and the political climate here. There is a lot we can learn from history if we bother to read.
