Vertigo by Joanna Walsh

5.0

This book is a wonderful example of poetic discomfort. Sentences moved from short and polished to long and awkward, yet when rereading them you feel as if each word is in precisely the spot it belongs. The discomfort comes in waves, when the words of Vertigo brush against the thoughts you've always had but could never express, and you may feel a sense of unease and familiarity at seeing them in black and white on cream pages.
It is not a book that you may connect with immediately. Nor may you feel a spark with each of these short stories. But you will find it, perhaps in 'Claustrophobia' or 'Young Mothers', or even 'And After...' or 'Relativity', and you will recognise yourself and the other characters in your life in Joanna Walsh's words.
Read this beautifully crafted little book if you want to see life through new eyes, and perhaps understand your own a little better in the process.
