The Haunted Mask by R.L. Stine

4.0

People were excited for me to read this one, and reminisced about the old movie, and now I can see why! I've not seen the movie, but maybe I ought to watch it after reading this.

Overall I enjoyed this one, it definitely had the spooky vibe to it and a lot of built up tension before the ending. No real twist in this one, just your typical horror ending. I won't say more than that. Horror enthusiasts should know what I mean.

My one gripe about this one is, R.L. Stine likes to stretch out scenes and tension, and though he's been getting better at how he stretches out the tension, this one faltered back to his old ways. For example, a scene where someone tells someone else to run. This sentence was repeated five times. "Run! Run!" Person stands there gaping. "Run! Run!" Still staring. Rinse and repeat, from the end of one chapter to the beginning of the next, before the person finally goes OH YEAH I SHOULD RUN!

I hate that so much. A couple of times, sure, because the person is so stunned to move. But not five times. And that's the reason it got 4 stars, instead of 4.5.
