This book was a hot mess. The main character was boring and annoying; the love interest was also boring. There was so much telling rather than showing in this book. We're told that Jeremy is depressed and having a hard time dealing with the death of his daughters but the only time we actually see this is in Verity's autobiography. In the actual present time of the story, he seems totally fine. On the first page, Lowen sees a man run over right in front of her and gets splattered with his blood; her mom has also been dead for one week. She's upset and grieving. Do we see any evidence of this? Not even slightly.

One of my biggest annoyances in this book (and others that do this same thing) is when a character discovers some interesting writing (letters, a book, or in this case, Verity's autobiography) and they take AGES to read it. A chapter a day? I'm not even a little bit convinced. Home girl would have binged that entire thing in an afternoon. You can't convince me otherwise. It was drawn out for the sake of the plot, but all it did was annoy me.

And we're not even going to talk about that ending. Seriously? There were so many better twists that could have happened that this was...just no.

The only reason that this got two stars from me was because I did read it in a day. It is addictive. But once I actually sat and thought about it, I kind of hated it.

Content warnings: descriptive and graphic descriptions of child abuse, death of a child, infidelity, open door sex scenes, language, attempted murder, murder, and probably more that I'm not thinking of right now...
