I like reading books like the tenet of wildfell hall because it shows how little changes over the years.

This book was first published in 1848 and features a woman who falls in love with a gas lighting fuck boy, ignores all the red flags and ignores what everyone else tells her because she thinks she can change him (we have all either had that friend or been that friend lol). She then finds out she can’t change him, she hates that he likes to party, he hates that her son gets more attention than he does, he then cheats on her, she still tries to change him, it gets worse, they both resent each other,  and then the two hate each other but are stuck together.  The cycle keeps on spinning.

Granted, it’s not like her aunt and uncle gave her an attractive alternative. And the morals aren’t quite the same in 2024 but you get the gist.

Don’t get me wrong he was a total asshole but also so was she. I found her judgy self-righteousness also insufferable. Honestly, I don’t see her as much of the saint she is made out to be, but that’s probably because I don’t have Victorian values and I also like to party.  I mean, let’s not forget, she does poison her son instead of just talking to him.

End of day- good book. A little slow and told mostly from the point of view of diary entries (classic). The novel is interesting for its time
Because it features a woman separating herself almost entirely from her husband. however I didn’t find any of the characters relatable.
