Aghhhh. I’m definitely in the minority here based on tonssss of early reviews for this finale, but it was just TOO LONG for me. I loooved WHTF but even upon rereading it a month ago I found it to be pretty slow, and this was almost double the length. I found myself skimming parts of this that just didn’t interest me, and despite the fact that the ONE THING I needed to happen with the ending happening, I found myself frustrated reading the final pages.
The romance between Nasir and Zafira has been one of my favorites because DUH, enemies to lovers and they’re just both stubbornly, stupidly in love. But GEEZ, they stressed me out to no end in this book. The amount of times I was suuuuper excited by an interaction they were having only to have it end with another miscommunication that kept them apart was frickin agony. It was so effing frustrating. Zafira’s annoyance with Nasir when she was sending him all kinds of mixed signals made me annoyed with her for a majority of the book, and it culminated with her refusing him at the end before FINALLY (thank GOD) coming to her senses. But why put both them and ME through that turmoil when we’ve already suffered for the entire book? Ugh.
Overall though I’m satisfied with the ending. I think that all of the characters’ storylines were wrapped up nicely and in unexpected ways that I actually really enjoyed. I liked Kifah’s continued role in this book and I also LOVED Lana! Yaaaaas Lana! I’m not crazy about Altair like most people so sometimes his POV chapters got skimmed, but I did really like his ending. Obviously I’m ecstatic with where Nasir and Zafira ended up but my god was it a roller coaster to get there.
