On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

5.0

THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT A SECOND BOOK SLUMP FOR MS. ANGIE THOMAS!

I literally just finished The Hate You Give on New Years Eve so I have read both books every close together and I am happy to admit that Angie Thomas is an awesome writer! I think she may have rightfully earned her place in my top 5 YA authors! My I remind everyone that I am just getting back into the world of reading so I haven't discovered everything that is popular at the moment, but this author has a way with words that is unlike anything that I've read and I've read a lot of books over the years! (at least in my opinion I have)

On The Come Up is totally out of genera for me (I usually read YA contemporary, romance and maybe some mysteries every now and then) this book is about Rap music (I listen to country music) the ghetto, the occasional gang reference and more. I know nothing about any of this things. However, Angie Thomas drew me into this story so easily because I love a great story with powerful female leads!

Bri is a superstar! (It doesn't matter that I know nothing about rap music or the community who follows listens to it.) The rhymes that Bri writes are real, raw and powerful. They are about what she has experienced in her personal life, what goes on the the community (THUG references) and she can come up with rhymes on the spot in the middle of a battle. It's mind-blowing and Inspirational!

This character has experienced unimaginable loss. Her father (who was also a rapper) was murdered in cold blood by a gang. Her mother is a recovering coke addict. And she has a big dream of becoming the next big rapper. The odds are stacked against her but Bri is strong and she pushes through a lot of challenges in this book.

Angie Thomas has proved to me that WORDS are powerful no matter what genera they come from. A good story is a good story no matter what side of the street you come from. With these two stories Angie Thomas has created a universe that has strong characters who face some very challenging situations head on! I hope that this is not that last time we hear from Bri! I need to know who the celebrity who reached out to her at the end of the book was! And I hope she makes it big!
