Howard the Duck, Volume 1: Duck Hunt by Chip Zdarsky, Ryan North

4.0

I'm really surprised to be giving 4 stars to this book. It was the first Howard the Duck comic I'd read (besides the one or two issues collected in Squirrel Girl) and, while I love Sex Criminals, I had low expectations for Chip Zdarsky. Once I opened the book, I realized that I'd been further duped into thinking it was the first arc of Howard issues. But NO! Volume 1 in this particular title comes after Vol. 0, cuz MAKE MINE MARVEL!

The title character doesn't really do much of interest in any of these stories, but his supporting cast of characters are lol-worthy. And can I just say, the cross-over story with Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is probably the first cross-over in comics that I've thought really worked well and made sense on both sides! Wow, never thought I'd say that, but the camp factor, humor, and D-Listers-Who-Can-Be-Better-Than-Avengers (or any of the other flagship Marvel books/characters/teams) really works.
