I think this book had good things going for it. I enjoyed the characters and the worldbuilding, and the plot points were interesting enough to keep me reading. Unfortunately, the execution fell through for me, and left me grasping for any emotions while reading. I liked the dynamics between Somin and Junu, and I think the potential was there, but I didn't quite feel the connection between them.

Probably a large portion of what made this book a miss for me was the writing style. Having gone two years between reading the first book and reading this sequel, I came back to it not recalling how choppy the writing is. The fractured sentence structure lacked any real flow for me, and I think that affected my enjoyment of the book. (Not to say those short, staccato-like sentences are a bad thing, necessarily. Personal preference.) I wonder if I might have enjoyed it more had I read it immediately after the first one, but what's done is done.

Overall, I don't regret reading the book, but it's not one I'm likely to return to.
