The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

“Well—let’s put it another way. Who was it said that coincidence was just God’s way of remaining anonymous?”

“... we don't get to choose our own hearts. We can't make ourselves want what's good for us or what's good for other people. We don't get to choose the people we are.”

“And in this staunch little portrait, it’s hard not to see the human in the finch. Dignified, vulnerable. One prisoner looking at another... The bird looks out at us. It’s not idealized or humanized.... The loneliness that separates every other living creature. Sorrow inseparable from joy.” Ch 12 viii

“Caring too much for objects can destroy you. Only -- if you take care for a thing enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? “And isn’t the whole point of things—beautiful things—that they connect you to some larger beauty? Those first images that crack your heart wide open and you spend the rest of your life chasing, or trying to recapture, in one way or another?”

I loved how all the parts of this book came together. It almost seemed like 3 different books put together to become a complete whole. I especially loved the first part and the end. The Vegas part and some sections were tedious at times. So many unexpected moments and I loved how it all fit together. So many interesting characters. I loved the references to the goldfinch throughout. Beautiful and unique.
