Ties That Tether by Jane Igharo

5.0

Ties That Tether by Jane Igharo is the story of a Nigerian woman who immigrated to Canada when she was twelve after the death of her beloved father. For years, she has held herself, along with her family, to the promise she made to her father on his deathbed: to marry a Nigerian man so that her culture wouldn't be erased.

That promise becomes comprised when Azere has a one night stand with a man who is not Nigerian but instead white. She desperately tries to severe the connection between them but fate intervenes in some unexpected ways. Will Azere be able to honor her father and play the compliant daughter or will she honor herself?

Ties That Tether is the modern day rom-com, which is a tad ironic considering Azere adores rom-coms herself. It is a story of culture, understanding identity, loyalty, and above all, what it means to love fiercely. The mother daughter relationship between Azere and her mother hit me right in the feels, almost too real for me to handle.
