Columbus Day by Craig Alanson

slow-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? No
  • Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

The Writing is good, the narration is good... It just isn't that interesting. Yes, it is predictable, but that doesn't bother me with this genre, it just didn't keep my attention much. The book is filled with misogyny and xenophobia (not solely towards actual aliens).

If you like the movie Independence Day, you might like this book, but only if you wished the main character was "a good ol' boy".

If you do not like cliffhanger endings, this book is not for you. There were two "objectives" of this book. The first one was anticlimactic, and the second was the cliffhanger.

I am a completionist, but I probably wouldn't read any more of this series... unless I ever get through my TBR list.

So, not terrible, but there is much better out there... Try Martha Well's Murderbot Diaries instead.
