The Shadow of the Gods
by John Gwynne
“When Gods go to war, it is no small thing…”
And this book, is no small thing. I have a feeling my “thought-cage” will be rattling with this story for days to come. Everything about this was fantastic. The story is solid, the world building is jaw-dropping, and the characters have my whole heart.
‘Shadow of the Gods’ is set in a Norse-inspired Virgio. The gods have fought themselves to extinction after become cruel, selfish, petty things. They have children (The Tainted) and relics that hold power within the realm. The Tainted are kept as slaves to those of high ranks. Tainted, of course, carry traits of their ancestors.
There are three point-of-view characters, Orka, Varg, and Elvar. All three are warriors in their own way. Varg, a thrall made Bloodsworn; Elvar, a Jarl’s daughter who gave up her title for a war band’s life; and Orka, a mother, a wife, and a seasoned warrior that has taken up a Homelife in place of the battlefield. All three characters are absolutely a delight. I would say one would be my favorite, and then the next POV would make me think the other was my favorite and repeat.
This book was addicting. Once I got about five chapters in, I was hooked. It had its teeth sunk into me deep. The mounting tension, a slowly revealed plot, unexpected twists, and some outstandingly written action scenes with plenty of bloodshed— *chefs kiss*. It’s a foundation of a larger story with so many things that I can’t wait to have resolved in book 2 and 3.
It’s a dangerous world to step into, but I highly recommend the journey. You will not be disappointed.
