These two main characters have no traits other than an often stated obsession with music and mixing. The obsession and the passion aren't on the page; these characters ring hollow, and the first section of the book just drags. The poor social climber who befriends the elite asshole has been done (better) many times before.
This book shines in the second half's discussion of racism, especially around the exploitation of black energy and creativity. How every part of this world, individual to societal, comes apart and fits back together is unique and impactful.
