The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan

4.0

Re-read- 28.09.21-30.09.21
4.5 stars

The Great Hunt is the second novel in the Wheel of Time series and it shows Jordan once again creating an incredibly well realised fantasy book, filled with great characters, world building and an ever mysterious magic system.

The best aspect of this novel for me was the expansion upon the culture of the Aes Sedai. Jordan really spent a lot of time going into their ways and traditions- such as their training process. Continuing from the Eye of the World, this organisation is very mysterious, so it was nice to get a bit more understanding of their inner-workings. Due to this we also got a lot more information into the magic system which still has a lot of intrigue so I cannot wait to keep learning about how this works.

Jordan also expanded upon his characters and I feel, Nynaeve and Rand in particular, really grew a lot in this book, especially in terms of maturity. We see Rand, a sheepherder, who refutes any allegations of him being the chosen on throughout the first book and the majority of the second. However by the end he has accepted this and I am excited to see his feelings on his future in the next book.
We spend a lot of time inside Nynaeve's head, and I really enjoyed seeing just how far she will go to protect her loved ones- mainly the ending scenes with Egwene and Min.
Selene was a great addition in my opinion and whilst I think its obvious who she is, the initial intrigue of meeting her was very well done and I enjoyed the scenes where she was present.

The overall plot of this book was incredibly interesting and the ending battle scene was truly some of the best action I have read in fantasy. Sitting on the edge of my seat the entire time and it was just very well written.

I do still have a continued issue with Jordan's pacing and feel his books are unnecessarily long, so often there are parts which do drag, however the pacing in TGH was much better than TEOTW.

Excited to read The Dragon Reborn next!
